Bolted End-Plate Connection – FEA Tutorial with ANSA, Abaqus and META

Welcome to this advanced tutorial on modeling Bolted End-Plate Connections using Finite Element Analysis (FEA)! In this series, we’ll walk through the entire process, from geometry setup to the analysis of complex nonlinearities, including material, geometric, and contact nonlinearities.

This exercise is based on the article “Numerical simulation of steel pretensioned bolted end-plate connections of different types and details” by Gang Shi et al., and it provides a great opportunity to compare simulation results with experimental data—a valuable learning experience for engineers and researchers alike.

We’ll cover:

  • Bolted connection modeling
  • Bolt pre-tension
  • Geometric, material, and contact nonlinearities
  • Perform simulations and compare them with experimental data
  • And much more!

I'm a CAE Durability Engineer specializing in structural analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM). I perform simulations involving buckling, fatigue, misuse, dynamic explicit events, and strength assessments, using tools such as ANSA, ABAQUS, NASTRAN, PAM-CRASH, LS-DYNA, nCode, META Post, and Hyperview. I hold a specialization in Numerical Structural Analysis with FEM from ESSS and a Mechanical Engineering degree with a focus on the automotive industry from Centro Universitário FEI. I'm also experienced in the design of metallic structures and actively create technical content about FEM and structural engineering. Currently, I am pursuing a master’s degree at the Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC), where I am developing a new user-defined finite element for bolted connections, intended for the design and analysis of complex steel structural connections.
